KITE LINES - what are Spectra and Dyneema

This guide aims to answer the question "is it worth paying extra for Dyneema or Spectra kite flying lines?

Both these materialsare widely regarded as the best materials for Kite flying lines due to their:

high strength
low weight
high abrasion resistance
and most importantly low stretch

They are superstrong polyethylene fibres produced using a patented gel spinning process. These remarkable fibresare up to 15 times stronger than steel and, weight-for-weight, is 40% stronger than competing fibers. They havehigh energy absorption and minimum stretching andare extremely resistant to abrasion, moisture, UV rays and chemicals. As a resultthey provide maximum strength and security for minimum weight.

So what does this mean for the kite?

The low stretch gives both more responsiveness and feeback from thekite. You can feel directly the slightest effect of the wind down the lines.

While the small cross section of the lines reduces drag and "line sag", and hence increases kite speed and all round performance.

Whats the difference betweenSpectraand Dyneema?

Both Spectra and Dyneema are HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) fibres. However, Dyneema (Manufactured in Europe and Asia), is generally thought as being of a slightly lower quality than the American version "Spectra". The individual filaments that make up a Dyneema yarn are smaller than individual fibres in a spectra yarn; this translates to better abrasion resistance for Spectra.

3 Network - Mobile phones.

Do you ever look at the phones on ebay, that say unlocked to all networks except 3? And wonder why that phone you want to buy, says "not on the 3 network".

Well, when a seller states that a phone is unlocked to all networks, it is actually unlocked to the 3 network as well. Your sim card would work for a few days, but then you will get a warning from 3 and if you ignore that, then they will disconnect you. So it is not the unlocking of the phone, it is the fact that 3 will not let you use the phone.

Why? Well, here is the simple non technical version. There are three types of phone, 1G, which was the big clumpy analogue sets of the Nineties. Then we went digital and they were 2G and now we're moving to 3G. For simplicity (but not technically accurate) think video mobile phones. Now there are still a lot more 2G phones out there than there are 3G.

The "3" network only operates on the 3G (think video phone) system, but the coverage isstill mainly in cities and large towns. So what happens when you're not in the coverage area? They use Orange as a back up (used to be O2) and for this they have to pay, a sort of roaming cost. So, if you're not in their coverage area they make no money. Now, if you put your sim card in a 2G phone that has been unlocked, it will be stuck on Orange as it can't pick up the 3G signal. Which means no revenue for "3".

So they will send you a message telling you to revert to your original phone. How do they know, you're using a different phone? Two ways, one your phone relays info about it and secondly your phone tells your provider where you are. So if you're in a 3G area but your phone is stuck on Orange instead of switching back to "3", then they will also know.

So, are you stuck with the handset you got with your sim? No, if you purchase a 3G phone which is unlocked then you can use that. So, just to clarify, 3G is a phone type, "3" is the network name of the provider just like O2 or Vodafone.

Does memory foam make you too hot in bed?

There are a couple of reasons that some people say that memory foam makes you too hot:

a) Some manufacturers use very deep layers of memory foam, and tell people that the deeper the foam the better. The truth is that the optimum thickness for memory foam is 2" to 2 1/2". Less than this and it won't be enough to contour to your body. If the foam is too deep, then you will sink into it, and it will wrap around you making you too hot.

b) Mattresses with Reflex foam and memory foam don't allow air to circulate under the memory foam to remove the heat. This obviously isn't an issue with pocket sprungor open coil sprungand memory foam mattresses. Memory foam does actually absorb heat from your body which then reacts with it to soften it. So as long as the heat can then disperse there is no problem.

Personally I find that I sweat less with my memory foam mattress than I did with my previous one.

By the way, despite what some sellers will tell you, full memory foam mattresses don't exist. If they did you would sink almost the full depth of the mattress and be engulfed by it. All memory foam mattresses (toppers are a different matter), have a layer under the memory foam to give you the bounce. This layer tends to be made from either reflex Foam, pocket springs, or open coil springs.

There are now new fabrics on the market that all claim to keep you cool in summer, and warm in winter. Some of these fabrics are just wicking fabrics that take the moisture away from your body so that you don't feel clammy. Other fabrics are rather clever, and actually stabilise the temperature. The best of these fabrics (in my opinion)available at the moment is Thermocool, or Climasmart as it is also known.

If you are really sensitive to heat, then there is always the alternative of latex foam. However you need to make sure it has a 2" deep full layer, and not just in zones like some manufacturers use.

PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU FIND THIS GUIDE HELPFUL OR NOT.

I see someone has rated this guide as unhelpful........obviously a seller who doesn't like me telling people the truth!!!!

Full size Dalek instructions

It is incredible the number of people selling instructions on how to build a dalek and more incredible that people are actually buying them.

They all claim to have diaries of their actual build, if so many people have actually built a dalek then why does the country no look like the battle of canary warfe.

Dalek builders are friendly folk who will probably give you the information free. Do a google for plans and diaries and you will get the information free, most of these items listed are copies of a 1970's radio times, which is widely available on the internet.

If you want to build a dalek, save your money (you will need it), what is for sale on Ebay are copied documents and diagrams that are available on the internet anyway.
